Bottle Biography Project update. According to the document on my website, the essay is to be 3 paragraphs. I forgot that sheet was attached to it when I uploaded it, and I am sorry for the confusion it has caused. We have spent a week researching numerous categories, facts, and details about the presidents on three different graphic organizers. This week I have demonstrated good techniques authors use in writing different parts of a biographical essay. We have broken it down and then the students have had time to model it when they wrote about their president. Due to the specific type of research we completed, I turned the essay into 5 paragraphs. I have made it very clear and gave the students time (15-25 minutes) to write in class each day. I hope this explains the situation and that you will understand that often lesson plans change on a daily basis. I try my best to update my website and alter the calendar, but sometimes it doesn't happen. The final essays are due on Tuesday, 12/5. We will spend the 4th and the 5th rewriting in class the final copy. Originally, I had planned to be in the computer lab, but we were bumped from the lab by administration. I have discussed this with the students each day this week. I appreciate your understanding. Mrs. Clarke

August 3, 2017:

I am thrilled to be teaching your child this year and have many exciting and fun plans for learning! I have taught at HMS since January, 2004 and consider my peers my family. Your child is in caring hands while in our care.

I am a preacher's wife and have been married to my college sweetheart since 1983. I have three children. The greatest adventure of my life is beginning later this year as I will become a grandmother for the first time and am very excited about this new position!!

You can stay tuned into our classroom by following what we do on my website. I will be adding powerpoints throughout the year that cover daily instruction. Many times there are links to video clips which may or may not work when accessed at home. I also try to update the calendar a week to a month in adavance at a time. Please understand that plans change frequently, but I try to keep it as accurate as possible.

Generally, I give out about 4 homeworks a quarter and take numerous daily grades/quizzes. Normally, there are four tests each quarter and are made up of a combination of cold reads, projects, and usually a writing component. Sometimes the projects (poster board, iMovie, PowerPoint, etc.) are completed at home and sometimes there is built in time in the classroom to complete. Your child will be given an instruction sheet covering each project long before it is due. I will also post these on my website. Typically, there will be no tests on Thursday or Friday due to my spotlight pull out schedule.

This year I have a reading challenge that I am very excited to introduce. I want your child to be immersed in historical fiction and nonfiction in order to build background knowledge about the world in which they live. The longer I teach it becomes clearer each year how little our children know about history. This makes it very diffictult for them to relate to lessons taught about the past and make accurate conclusions about current events leading to future conflicts or changes in our government and culture. After he/she reads a novel, they are to complete a summary of the book (I will provide the format). Students who read 20+ reading level and age appropriate novels for their ability levels will participate in an end of the year party. Ten Extra points will be added to the lowest scored tests and quizzes this year for each summary turned in to me. An excellent summary will earn the maximum points. If I feel the summary is inadequate, I will give your child an opportunity to redo and resubmit.

I have an extensive library to choose from in my classroom as well as the HMS library. Your child is welcome to read any book of his choosing as long as it fits the requirements. This is a mandatory assignment in my class this year. It will depend upon your child as to how many books they complete. I am personally excited to begin the challenge by reading from the Dear America series, The Second Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart: Cannons at Dawn, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1779. You can help your child complete this fun task at home. Read a book with them, discuss what is happening, and help your child to live a rich part of our history.

Thank you for entrusting the care of your child to me this year. I will be a great year!
