Parents,

Third grade is an exciting year as growth in your child’s academic ability expands due

to the increase in work and rigor. The students are expected to be more responsible. The

children are required to complete a majority of their classwork independently. You can make

this transition go smoothly by beginning to encourage more independence, responsibility,

and developing consistent study habits at home. We can’t wait to meet you and

your kiddo when we return in July!

Sincerely,

Your 3rd Grade Team

READING

In reading, children transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. Reading grades reflect comprehension and content knowledge. Our reading curriculum is CKLA, which exposes our students to highly qualified instructional materials and topics. It would be beneficial to reinforce these learning topics at home. *See CKLA units section. Vocabulary and spelling words will be sent home on our weekly newsletter. It is your child’s responsibilty to practice these at home. We also encourage your child to read nightly!

CKLA Units

Help your child build strong background knowledge over the summer to boost their comprehension and critical thinking for the upcoming school year by exploring the following topics.

  • Classic Tales

  • Animal Classification

  • The Human Body

  • Vikings

  • Astronomy

  • Early American Explorers

  • Colonial America

  • Ecology

MATH

In math, children begin to solve problems that involve using higher level thinking skills and more application. It is vital that students memorize their multiplication facts in 3rd grade. Daily practice at home is necessary. See recommended sites/apps below.
